Nixon's resignation did not take effect until 1200, so he WAS still President when the flight to California took off. The call sign switch came when the resignation took effect, not when Ford was sworn in.

I thought Air Force one was a call sign, not a specific vehicle.

Wherever AirForce one goes, its twin follows but is parked at a different nearby airport for logistical/military reasons.

There is also a smaller corporate-type jet that flies nearby routes if needed along with two Gulfstream jets. Known as C-20Cs, the planes don’t really officially exist. But for years, they have gone nearly everywhere the president travels, paralleling presidential trips, serving as his chameleons, blending in anonymously at airports close by presidential visits—but never at the same airport where Air Force One itself is landing. They have some special purpose or capability but those details are hushed up. So when the President flies, there are actually FIVE jets on the trip. The other four nearby and do not land at the same airport as Air Force- One.

There is an older model and its accompanying planes that are kept in the midwest somewhere. I can't remember the base. I think it is in Wyoming or another state and is rarely mentioned, but I have seen it in another video. It has all-analog gauges and controls in case of EMP attacks and is not as luxurious.

Odd fact: When Trump ordered new planes for the next president (turned put not to be him), he stated they should save money and dispense with the ability to refuel in-flight. I remember thinking how idiotic and there was no way the Air Force and Secret Service were going to acquiesce to that request.

The laser defense system does not shoot down ballistic missiles. Another US 747 was converted to fire a massive laser in the 747s nose. Part of the US Star Wars plan. But was not found to be effective. The Air-Force One laser system likely fires at radar or infrared anti aircraft missiles. The laser can destroy the missile targeting system. The radar or heat seeker mechanism. Blinding the missile.

So you mean they are going to rebuild the 747 into a Concorde? Might be more work than to build a supersonic airliner from scratch.
