F1 Firsts: Ground Effect Aerodynamics banned formula 1 technology

by adminDianeAshleyBooks

You may have heard of ground effect before … but did you know it was created entirely by accident? Take a look at the history of this old-school F1 technology that paved the way for modern-day aerodynamic marvels. What does she say here?? (0:27)
It sounds like she says "team Olympus".. yet this car is clearly Lotus and is also correctly pronounced at the end of the video. (1:38)

Can be so dangerous if for any reason ground falls under the car. Like the entire circuit falling down… never now.

I wonder how much faster the current f1 cars would be with just skirts installed

Yeah, that did not at all explain how ground effect works. Skirts are only one element of the technology that Lotus used to generate it, but the skirts have not much to do with the principle itself. It was the upward bending shape of the rear part of the Lotus 78's side-pods’ floor that aerodynamically created a lower air pressure than the ambient air pressure resulting in the car being sucked towards the ground – or, if you like, the car being pushed down to the ground by the air above it. The skirts only prevented air from flowing under the car from the sides. And yes, it was really designed and not discovered. Knowledge is useful when making and publishing videos on physics, technology and history.

"Gave them huge amounts of downforce without the drag"…. Key sentence there, I still don't know what they haven't gone back to ground effects because it would surely solve a lot of the dirty air/following issues?

You explain they had skirts and that that is where the ground effect took shape, but you don't explain why the hell the side skirts were originally put there.

FIA: “How do we get cars to follow closer creating exciting racing?”
Engineers: “Very well regulated ground effect cars.”
Non engineers: “The cars will be too fast around corners and everyone will die!”
Engineers: “That can be mitigated by well written reg…”
Non engineers: “No! Nothing has changed technology-wise in 40 years! Ground effect equals mass death and destruction!”
FIA: “So, make everything bigger?”

Should also cover why they were banned. There were serious safety issues in addition to the incredible performance increase.

I heard that when they were experimenting with wing section on a wind tunnel model , the model wing sections were a bit flimsy and started to droop , until the outer edge made contact with the ground , at which time the downforce level went up . They thought about this and decided to do another model with the edges sealed with what became skirts.

I dreamed of Formula 1 this night, both Mercedes started from last place, and it was a year were the aerodinamics were pretty simple, but damn those Mercedes were beautiful as f… And they had to recover in the race

What? No graphic showing the Venturi shape of the sidepod bottom or explaining how it actually works or what the skirts actually do? A bit poor tbh.

My money is on the huge gulf between the front runners and everyone else being due to the subtle nature of the vortex pseudo skirts used currently.
