Did you know so much goes into these Pistons?

F1 engines are worth 7 million

Mercedes: proceeds to change engine 5 times throughout the season

I’m late to the party but, being in the field of engine components:
1- They don’t cost nearly close to 50.000$. Including R&D, designing a piston is not rocket science.
Btw: a regular piston doesn’t cost 50$ either (cost! =/= price advertised by OEM’s/Tier 1s!)

2- these tolerances shown are nothing special. They’re actually in the microns range, which is fine, just means more scrap if the process isn’t capable.

The biggest difference between a regular and an F1 piston is quality control.

That's because you're trying to keep your supply chain too damn close. Those could be made for 1/100 of the cost. And yes I have a factory that can do that.

No way is a piston worth 50k. Keep them son.

I call bs! Unless your talking RD for piston. I worked for Cosworth US.. pistons had a 500 mile life, cranks had a 1000 mile life. I knew the cranks cost about $10,000.

So if these engines are seized when cold, do they have to be at normal operating temps to be able to fit the piston into the bore when building them ?

Reply
Wes Wright 02/03/2022 - 5:50 Chiều

Can I ask you how the piston of an F1 car is fitted, given the tolerance is so tight that the engine is seized if it is at normal temperature?

BariumCobaltNitrog3n 02/03/2022 - 5:50 Chiều

So a lot of the cost is for people to measure it. 2618 and 4032 are used in forged pistons with prices from 200-900 Pounds/kilo. That will add up.

Friend of the One-Eyed Ladies 02/03/2022 - 5:50 Chiều

So… then they must have to assemble the engine at operating temperature? You'd never get the pistons into the bores without heating everything up. That's gotta be somebody's favorite job, working with finicky components that are also at 100C+.

0.1mm tolerance to a quality engineer is quite common.

David Harding 02/03/2022 - 5:50 Chiều

If something was 1000 times cheaper, the supplier would need to pay the customer 999 times the amount. Put another way, if something was 1 times cheaper, it would be free. You actually meant it was 1/100th of the price.

Still doesn’t nearly justify 70k USD for a single piston. That figure is just nonsense

The hiegth of the piston is not proportion to its cylindrical size. It is a poor design.

I wonder how they get the pistons inside and out side the engine.

It must need some sort of specialist very experience tools to do the job

Really would have appreciated some more detailed explanation on the metallurgical processes that go into making these pistons, or how the machinists achieve the precise tolerances required during the actual machining processes. Even something on how these machinists overcome the difficulties involved with cutting these alloys, that would go some way towards explaining why these pistons cost so much. There's no detail about anything in this video, it's all a cursory glance at basic processes before moving on to something else.
People don't need to know the basics of how an engine works, they watched to find out the why's and how's on these particular pistons and it doesn't deliver that. It's hipster clickbait.

Absolute, incredible, astonishing crap.
A 0.1 tolerance is easily achieved, your entire vid was about the engineering of the piston not about the manufacture.
If the material costs £50k I’d agree the price is fair, if not (and it’s not) then it’s all in mark up.
Simple.
Material + machining + inspection + transport.
There is literally nothing else, where is the cost?
